Neil Sullivan - MTBASullivan played consistently well during the decisive series, shooting highs of 225, 248 and 247 for a solid 1,652 and a winning total of 4,860 pins (202.5 ave) as Spiteri hung on to second place on 4,729.

Kenneth Arpa claimed third after a good 1,670-session (total 4,728) while Burke suffered a poor 1,439 series, to fall way out of contention and finish ninth.

In the women’s competition, only an absolute disaster could have prevented Abela from claiming a convincing victory and her 15th national title, having led by 476 pins from Tiziana Carannante after 16 games (3,186-2,710).

Abela did have a shaky start on Day Three, opening with a low 149-game. However, she soon improved to power through the remaining seven with top games of 234, 258 and a superb 276 effort, to complete a 1,672 series for a final tally of 4,858 (202.4).

Abela finished 712 pins ahead of Carannante (4,146, 172.7 ave) while third place went to Melissa Swift on 4,105 (171 ave).

The two national champions are currently following a strict training regime with lane time provided by the Eden SuperBowl, prior to their trip to Lahti next month.

Sue Abela wins 3 Gold and a Bronze Medal at the MCC in Barcelona

Popularly known as the Queen of the Mediterranean, Abela is the only competitor who has played in each of the 14 Mediterranean Challenge Cups and has won medals in all but one. She showed her talent last week by not only topping the all event standings with a lead of over 300 pins on the number two, but she was the only competitor, man or woman, who bowled six consecutive 200-plus games in the Singles event to claim her first gold of the week. A day later in the Doubles pairing with Tiziana Carannante she claimed her second gold medal of this prestigious event. Her third was for the all events. In the masters she captured the bronze and fourth medal for Malta.

MTBA.eu Editors February 2011

Neil Sullivan was on Cloud Nine with his silver medal. “We were not sure if we will make it to the championship, after our flight had to be delayed for a day because of bad weather in Malta.” said Sullivan who arrived with his team late yesterday evening. “We could only squeeze in one practice last night. Considering all that, the silver medal is indeed a bonus.
“I had not thought about winning a medal going into the last game when I was placed fourth. I just concentrated on my game and gave my best and it was good enough to win me the silver,” said Sullivan who had games of 244,185,277,194,235 and 258 for an average of 232.2 and 33 pins behind the winner of the Gold medal Zulmazran from Malaysia

The two National Champions went head to head playing the best of three games. Neil’s opening game was no match for Sue, as he claimed the first point with no problems. The 2nd game was slightly different Sue was a few pins ahead of Neil going into the last frame. Sue left a difficult split to convert, the game went down to this one shot if Sue spare d she would win the point and a chance to play a third game if not Neil would be champion. Sue made the spare and moved on to play a very confident third game taking Neil out of the game completely to claim the masters title.

Div I -Commentary - Week 17
Only 3 points separate the top 3 teams with one week remaining. Anything can happen but okmalta.com are now firm favourites to win the league. On the other hand, relegation is already decided.

Gladiators may be relegated but they put in a good display to win 6 from MIA. Philip Borg Barthet was in a good mood and played very consistently to contribute 589 pins whilst James Gauci Borda shot a 200 game and a 576 total series. Antoine Cuschieri was best bowler for MIA.

Turu's have secured the 4th spot after beating Salitos 6-2. Even if Turu's lose 8-0, their superior pinfall would still guarantee 4th place. Turu's played teh 3rd highest team series. all the Turu's played well with Tiziana and Philippe registering 584 and 582 respectively. Salitos played over 700 in all 3 games. David Xuereb was their top bowler.

Ramis continue their good form winning all 8 points and setting the highest team series of the week. Paul Baldacchino and Ray Falzon were the best 2 bowlers from all teams. Ramis won the first 2 games with a good margin but had to fight all the way to win the last game. Matthew Cossai was the best bowler for the Clan with a good 616 (571) series.

HSBC had a good start and seemed to be winning the first game but a bad 9th frame coupled with a strong finish from Fina ruined their chance. Thereafter Fina sped away. HSBC usually rely on Brian Farrugia to score points but this time round he was low bowler and complaining of his back. Sue Abela was the top bowler for Fina closely followed by Danial and Justin.

okmalta.com received a strong challenge from Royal Shock, winning game 1 by 13 pins and game 3 by merely 5. Losing those 4 points would have seen them in 3rd place and the Royals still challenging for 4th place. In the end. ok pulled off all 8 points to go into the final week as firm favourites. Dennis was the hi-man for ok whilst Joe Cassar was the top bowler for the Royals and 3rd highest all round.
